As a new parent I sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed with everything I need to know and all the things I need to do for my son. I want the best for him, which means spending as much time with him as possible, making sure he knows how much my wife and I love him, and paying attention to the products we use. I have been just so impressed with a particular brand that I started Tommee Tippee Reviews so other parents could find great products easily, products that would benefit them and their children.
Here are just some of the products that we’ve used so far:
A couple months ago I had never heard the name Tommee Tippee. I had heard of Playtex, Gerber, Dr. Brown’s and a number of other products. Not because I have any big background in child raising, but because I researched products during my wife’s pregnancy. These are all names familiar in the USA and in pretty wide use. It was not until the baby shower when we received some bottles that I learned of this brand name.
The Tommee Tippee line of products was introduced in the UK in 1965. It only became available in the US, where I am from, in 2010. Prior to this the line was voted a UK Superbrand by consumers, marking it as one of the top 500 brands in the country, with their Closer to Nature bottle winning the Best Bottle Gold Award for the third time. After a couple months with these products, I can see why they are so well received by consumers.
The first product we had, a gift from the baby shower, were some Closer to Nature Baby Bottles. The manufacturer claims they are designed to mimic a mother’s breast which helps babies to switch back and forth between the bottle and the breast. I can tell you that in our household that has held true. One of the cool things about these is that the wide, stretchable nipples come in slow, medium, and fast flow rates – we started with the slow, but just recently switched to medium. They also feature an easi-vent valve to reduce air intake and thereby reduce colic and painful gas. Time after time our boy belts out a couple burps after feeding, they is pretty much gas free. Now if any of my friends read this, please do not be offended. But…we took back a lot of gifts and switched them for the Tommee Tippee line. And if you are offended, well please get over it because we are glad we did it.
We got the bottle warmer, which works like a charm and is super compact. They have two sterilizers: one works in your microwave with a little water, but we opted for the one that runs on electricity. They both are rated at killing 99.9% of germs, so I think it’s just personal preference. We also have been using the pacifier as it was designed by a pediatric dentist and supports the development of teeth naturally. We’ll have to do a follow up on that item, because first of all what baby does not enjoy a pacifier, and second there are no teeth yet – thank goodness, because that would be unusual for such a young boy.
Once we discovered this fantastic brand we were amazed at how many products they have. Feedback and active assistance from new breastfeeding mothers, midwives, nurses and other medical professionals was totally integrated into the design and function of the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Newborn Starter set. The overall end result developed into an innate system that promotes natural feeding. This system decreases the confusion that quite frequently develops in newborns occurring between natural breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Newborns instantaneously latch onto the system and are not able to tell the difference between the bottle’s nipple and the real thing.
I purchased this feeding system from Amazon for $60.00 shortly after bringing my premature baby daughter home from the hospital. She lacked the strength to properly suckle to breast feeding, and hospital staff used the smallest bottles they could find to feed her. My daughter readily accepted the Newborn Starter system without hesitation eagerly feeding from the bottles every time. The bottles are ergonomically designed for easy handling and to prevent accidental slippage.
A special feature of the Newborn Starter set is the exclusive Easi-vent valve located on the nipple’s base. This vent was created to decrease the amount of air a baby inhales during feeding. This vent allows air to escape in order to prevent colic and gas build up causing discomfort in a baby’s delicate digestive system. This was a relief for my tiny daughter who fussed at the slightest thing causing distress. Nipples are naturally shaped, soft and wide that are flexible closely imitating a female’s mammary anatomy.
I do strongly recommend hand washing the nipples and bottles since the dishwasher has not been able to adequately clean the set. Pinch the vent on the nipple after washing to prevent the nipple vent from sealing itself shut preventing the air exchange during feeding times. Stretch the tip of the nipple to make sure it is not collapsed or closed up as well. I also discovered that the nipples will not collapse if you keep the vent valve faced downwards during feedings.
